Liposomal γ-aminobutyric acid

Liposomal γ-aminobutyric acid (liposomal GABA) is a specialized formulation designed to improve the stability, delivery, and potential bioavailability of γ-aminobutyric acid, a naturally occurring inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human nervous system. GABA plays an important role in regulating neuronal excitability, helping to maintain a balance between stimulation and relaxation in the brain. Because of this function, it has attracted significant attention in the fields of nutrition, wellness, and functional ingredients. The liposomal form is intended to protect GABA during processing and digestion, while also supporting more efficient absorption in the body. The liposome itself is a microscopic vesicle made primarily from phospholipids, which are similar in structure to the lipids found in cell membranes. This structure allows the active ingredient to be encapsulated within a protective layer. By surrounding GABA with phospholipid bilayers, liposomal technology may help shield it from environmental stress such as oxidation, moisture, and degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. This can be especially useful for ingredients that are sensitive or that may have limited absorption in non-encapsulated form. One of the main advantages of liposomal GABA is its potential to enhance delivery. Traditional GABA supplements may face challenges related to digestion and transport, which can affect how much of the ingredient is available for use in the body. Liposomal encapsulation may improve the passage of GABA through the digestive system and support more consistent uptake. As a result, it is often considered an advanced form for formulations intended to support relaxation, stress management, and general nervous system balance. In nutritional applications, liposomal GABA is commonly used in dietary supplements, beverages, and functional formulations aimed at promoting calmness and supporting sleep quality. It is often combined with other ingredients such as magnesium, L-theanine, or botanical extracts to create comprehensive wellness products. The liposomal format may also improve the sensory properties of a formulation by reducing unpleasant taste or odor that can sometimes be associated with free amino acid ingredients. From a manufacturing perspective, liposomal GABA can be produced using processes such as high-pressure homogenization, ultrasonication, or thin-film hydration, depending on the desired particle size and encapsulation efficiency. Key quality factors include vesicle size, stability, phospholipid composition, encapsulation rate, and shelf life. Proper formulation design is important to ensure that the liposomes remain stable during storage and deliver the active ingredient effectively. In summary, liposomal γ-aminobutyric acid represents an innovative delivery form of a well-known neurotransmitter-related ingredient. By combining the physiological significance of GABA with the protective and absorption-enhancing properties of liposomes, this formulation offers a promising option for modern nutritional and functional applications. It is valued for its potential to support relaxation, improve ingredient stability, and provide a more advanced supplement experience.

Liposomal Silymarin 70% is a high-purity, liposomal-encapsulated form of silymarin—the standardized flavonolignan complex extracted from the seeds of Silybum marianum (milk thistle)—standardized to ≥70% silymarin content. Silymarin is a mixture of flavonolignans, primarily composed of silybin (60–70% of total content), isosilybin, silydianin, and silychristin, and is widely recognized as one of the most extensively researched botanical hepatoprotective agents. However, native silymarin suffers from extremely poor oral bioavailability (0.73%) due to poor water solubility, extensive phase II metabolism, and low intestinal permeability. Liposomal encapsulation within a phospholipid bilayer addresses these fundamental limitations. A lecithin-based phytosomal-liposomal formulation of silymarin achieved a 3.5-fold higher oral bioavailability compared to silymarin suspension, with 1.5-fold better hepatoprotection efficacy and 10-fold better prevention of ROS production in vitro. A separate liposomal formulation containing bile salts achieved a 4.8-fold increase in AUC₀–ₜ. This water-dispersible powder is suitable for capsules, functional beverages, and nutritional formulations targeting liver support, hepatoprotection, and antioxidant defense. Each batch is HPLC-standardized and quality-tested for purity, identity, and silymarin content.
